Celebrity Big Brother was the most tweeted about TV show in January, generating two million mentions over four weeks on the social media network.
The launch episode of the Channel 5 reality show, which saw Perez Hilton, Katie Hopkins and Patsy Kensit enter the twisted fairytale-themed house, was the most mentioned individual show of any TV programme last month. As the show got underway, 9,500 messages were sent per minute.
ITV’s National Television Awards, at which Downton Abbey was crowned best drama, saw lots of Twitter action, generating over 200,000 tweets from two million people, according to Broadcast.
As a van crashed into Albert Square in The New Year’s Day EastEnders episode, viewers created a Twitter storm with 100,000 tweets making the special episode the sixth biggest show of the month on social media.
Channel 4’s biggest social media hit was suitably its one-off drama Cyberbully starring Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams with 40,000 mentions.
Celebrity Big Brother’s winning two million tweets in January beat December 2014’s most tweeted about show The X Factor which generated just over a million mentions. According to Kantar Media, the social media frenzy peaked with over 18,000 messages per minute on December 14th as Ben Haenow was crowned winner.
