How Eddie Redmayne is actually like Joey from Friends

Note to self: lying about being able to ride a horse will come back to haunt you

Remember that episode of Friends where Phoebe calls Joey out on all the things he’s lied about on his acting CV?

Proficient in tap-dancing? A lie.

Ability to speak fluent French? A lie.

Horse riding? “Would fall off a lot.”

Well, it turns out Oscar nominee Eddie Redmayne isn’t innocent of one of Joey’s tall tales either: namely lying about being able to ride a horse.

After giving director Tom Hooper the impression he could ride a horse during auditions for Elizabeth I, Redmayne found himself on a gigantic stallion flanked by 40 Lithuanian stuntmen also on horses, and Helen Mirren waiting at the other end of the road.

“They called action and I basically went ferociously down at 100 miles an hour. I almost killed myself, almost killed half of the crew,” Redmayne reveals to US chat show host Conan O’Brien. “Tom Hooper comes from behind Helen Mirren with a huge loud speaker and goes, ‘You’re a f***ing liar, Redmayne.’”

The Oscar nominee was promptly packed off to horse camp. But that wasn’t the end of it. When working with Hooper again on smash-hit Les Misérables, the director got his own back.

“There’s a scene where I have to ride a horse purely to get back at me for all those years of lying. It genuinely wasn’t part of the plot.”
