Watch Downton’s Lady Edith swapping life above stairs in new Madame Bovary trailer

Downton Abbey actress Laura Carmichael plays maid Henrietta in the new film adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's C19th classic alongside Paul Giamatti and Rhys Ifans

She is best known for playing the trying and long-suffering daughter of Lord Grantham’s daughter Lady Edith in Downton Abbey.

But Laura Carmichael has swapped her fancy gown for a maid’s outfit in the new film adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s classic novel Madame Bovary, as the first official trailer shows.

Mia Wasikowska, star of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, plays heroine Emma Bovary, a country girl who grows restless in her marriage to her bourgeois husband Charles played by Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire actor Henry Lloyd-Hughes.

Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk about Kevin) plays one of Emma’s lovers, whilst Rhys Ifans stars as unscrupulous merchant Monsieur Lheureux.

Sideways star Paul Giamatti has taken on the role of ruthless businessman Monsieur Homais.

Directed by Sophie Barthes, Madame Bovary will be released in the UK later this year.
