Doctor Who’s top ten unlikely casting rumours

Benedict Cumberbatch as the Master? Ben Kingsley as Davros? Jason Statham as the Doctor?! We count down the weirdest casting rumours of the modern era...

5. Gillian Anderson as… the Rani (2009)

Another Rani one. In 2009, former The X-Files star Gillian Anderson was also reported to be taking on the role in Matt Smith’s first series as the Doctor. Again, an ‘insider’ had the news: “The Rani would be a perfect role for her as the character used to be regarded as one of the Doctor’s most deadly opponents,” before oddly contradicting themselves with, “The team behind the show are keen for the next Doctor to have lots of new enemies.”

But what if the truth was out there?

Gillian Anderson would have played the Rani and she would have been brilliant. End of.

4. Ben Kingsley as… Davros (2007)

Ah 2007, a vintage year for rumours. This time it’s a report that Hollywood actor Ben Kingsley is to sit through hours of make-up to play Davros, creator of the Daleks, in the series four finale. The inevitable insider quote: “Ben’s agent has been in talks for a while now and he’s very keen to play the part of Davros. A deal will be signed any day now.” Let’s hope he’s still not waiting.

But what if it ended up being true?

Instead of the perfectly fine Julien Bleach playing Davros in Journey’s End we would have had Kingsley. Beyond Doctor Who’s budget, there probably wouldn’t have been that much a difference.
