Doctor Who’s top ten unlikely casting rumours

Benedict Cumberbatch as the Master? Ben Kingsley as Davros? Jason Statham as the Doctor?! We count down the weirdest casting rumours of the modern era...

7. Kylie Minogue as… a Cyberwoman (2007)

In the run up to filming on 2007’s Doctor Who Christmas special, it was reported by one sunday tabloid that Kylie Minogue had met with Russell T Davis and would be starring in the episode as a “sexy, evil Cyberwoman.” Well, at least they got it half right.

But what if it ended up being true?

If you want a sneak peek at what could have been then give the Christmas special a year later a watch, as, interestingly, the concept of an ‘evil Cyberwoman’ doesn’t sound too dissimilar to Dervla Kirwan’s role as Miss Hartigan in The Next Doctor.

6. Joan Collins as… the Rani (2007)

If you know anything about the Rani, the amoral Time Lady played by Kate O’Mara in the ’80s then you’ll know that Joan Collins is about as perfect as can be for the villain’s camp, power-dressing snarl. And in the run-up to the fourth series, that’s what one paper reported as happening, with Collins apparently featuring in a storyline where it’s revealed she and the Doctor had had… a son. Yes, that’s right – a son.
