To be a Doctor Who fan is to be someone who doesn’t believe every casting rumour they read; a point proved marvellously when the press is faced with the prospect of a new companion, or, better yet, a new Doctor.
Yet, of all those many, many rumours over the years, there are a precious few that sounded dubious at the time, but now – with the benefit of hindsight – seem just out-and-out ridiculous. But which is the most unlikely of these rumours? RadioTimes.com thinks we know, so, of course, have compiled our top ten.
But did we leave any out? Let us know in the comments below. Who knows – a follow-up article based on your suggestions might even in order.
10. Benedict Cumberbatch as… the Master (2012)
In news that threatened to set the internet on fire, it was reported in 2012 that everyone’s favourite Cumberbatch (Benedict) would be starring opposite Matt Smith as the Master in the 50th anniversary special. One paper even had an ‘insider source’, who said: “It’s fitting that the Doctor comes face to face with his ultimate enemy, The Master, for the 50th anniversary and it’s felt Benedict is the perfect choice if schedules can work.” What a scoop!
But what if it ended up being true?
Tumblr collapses, hospitals overflow with cases of the ‘feels’ and – having crossed the streams between Doctor Who and Sherlock in such an obvious way – everyone else grumbles that Steven Moffat has ruined the 50th anniversary special.
