Anna Maxwell Martin has been cast in ITV’s upcoming gothic period crime drama The Frankenstein Chronicles.
The Bletchely Circle actress joins Sean Bean in a “re-imagining” of the novel. The publicity materials also call it a “myth”, but I’m not sure anyone believes Frankenstein actually happened and it wasn’t passed down by folklore. That said, Shelley is thought to have incorporated some Promethean myth from Ovid into the story (I digress).
Also joining Bean are Charlie Creed-Miles from Ripper Street and Peaky Blinders; Ed Stoppard (Cilla); Elliot Cowan (Da Vinci’s Demons) and about half the cast of Game of Thrones (Kate Dickie, Patrick Fitzsymons, Steve Wilson). Steven Berkoff is in there too.
Essentially, Frankenstein is going to be spoiled for choice when it comes to body parts.
The six-part adaptation will have all of the familiar elements from Mary Shelley’s classic story. Sean Bean plays Inspector John Marlott, who delves into the underworld of Georgian England after discovering a chopped up and reassembled child during a run-of-the-mill opium raid.
Oh, also, Tom Ward (Silent Witness) will play Sean Bean’s boss – the real-life home secretary Robert Peel – because, well, it’s reimagined.
