Sam Smith, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran react to their Brit Awards nominations

The music industry learned who was up for the prestigious British gongs yesterday – and nominees Mark Ronson, George Ezra and Jess Glynne all shared their delight on social media

The Brit nominations are in and Sam Smith is leading the charge with five nominations, including nods for best British male, best British single and breakthrough artist, although the February ceremony will see him face stiff competition from guitar-toting duo George Ezra and Ed Sheeran across several categories.

Meanwhile, newcomer Jess Glynne is up for three awards, competing against Ella Henderson, FKA Twigs, Paloma Faith and Lily Allen in the best British female category.

With the full shortlist announced yesterday evening, the stars have been taking to social media in the last twelve hours to react to the news of their nominations.

Sam Smith – whose five nods also include video of the year and the coveted best album – was in New York about to perform at Madison Square Gardens but shared his delight on Instagram:

Ed Sheeran seems pretty pleased…

Lily Allen was in shock.

Before congratulating her fellow nominees:

Her direct competition Paloma Faith was another to tweet her excitement…

Clean Bandit were nominated for best British group and best single – let’s hope they calmed down before they made it on stage:

James Bay is still happy about bagging the Critics’ Choice award back in December.

George Ezra – who was also due to play at Madison Square Gardens – was just adorable…

Meanwhile Damon Albarn earned his first solo Brit nomination for best British male, 20 years after collecting four gongs with Blur.

Best international female nominee Taylor Swift is bursting with excitement (and who could blame her?)

And best British female hopeful Jessie Ware toasted a great 24 hours.

One Direction got a nod for best British group and video of the year for You & I – and Niall was pretty chuffed…

Beck took to Twitter to react to being shortlisted for best international male.

With his rival Hozier soon following suit…

And as for the Foo Fighters and Mark Ronson? They’re “psyched”…
