The stars and director of the groundbreaking movie share the experience of filming a story over 12 years

Richard Linklater’s Boyhood has been nominated for best picture at this year’s Oscars, with Linklater himself up in the best director category and stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette shortlisted for the supporting actor awards – and it’s easy to see why.

Linklater brought together the same cast every year for 12 years so that they grew and aged in real time, with Hawke and Arquette playing the parents of a young boy and his sister on their journey towards adulthood.

As well as a groundbreaking movie it proved a unique and life-changing experience for its stars, as they reveal in this fascinating and touching exclusive featurette.

“I would look forward to going back [each year],” says Arquette. “It was like family. The hardest thing was when it ended. I wanted to continue shooting it for the rest of my life…”
