Back to the Future’s self-tying shoes will become a reality in 2015

Now if we can just get a release date for that hoverboard...

There’s no sign of most of the space-age gadgets that seminal time travel flick Back to the Future part two promised us in 2015 – but it looks like we will get our hands on one futuristic fashion item.

Yes, Marty McFly’s (Michael J Fox) self-lacing Nike sneakers will become a reality this year, and will actually include the self-lacing technology – though no word yet on how well they grip the hoverboards we’re also definitely going to get in 2015 (movies promised us).

According to Nice Kicks, Nike designer Tinker Hatfield (main image) confirmed the plans (previously mooted last year) for the hi-tech Nike MAGS at the Agenda Trade Show, and while he couldn’t pin down an exact release date he said that there were still “11 and two-thirds months left in 2015.”

We should note, however, that there is slightly less time until Marty’s visit to 2015 in the film, which took place on October 21st  – Nike really need to get their self-pulling socks on.

This isn’t the first time that Nike have attempted a version of the footwear either – they previously auctioned off 1,500 pairs of the sneakers in 2011, making $4.7 million for versions of the shoes that didn’t even tie themselves up. What is this, 1985?
