The real reason why Emma Barton left her family 22 years ago is to be revealed in next week’s episodes of Emmerdale.
Up to this point, viewers have been left to think that Emma departed due to her suspicions that husband James playing away from home with Moira. But now it seems that there’s more to the story than meets the eye.
“It all comes out,” says actress Gillian Kearney, who plays Emma. “And I think the viewers will find it quite surprising.”
Scenes to be shown next week will also see James’s infidelity with Moira confirmed to Emma when Ross lets slip the truth. It’s a revelation that results in a furious showdown.
“There are fireworks,” continues the actress. “Emma goes to the Woolpack, which she knows is where James lives, and lets him know in quite a public fashion how she feels. Emma’s world has been turned upside down – she suspected James was having an affair but he constantly denied it. So she’s blamed herself for 22 years – she didn’t think she was a fit mother when James asked her to leave. And she’s furious because she’s been robbed of those years.”
However, despite her fury, it seems that Emma does have hopes for a reconciliation. Could the Bartons be a family unit again? “All Emma wants is to be part of the family again. And ideally that would include James. She wants to go back to where she was 22 years and get it right this time. But whether she can do it remains to be seen.”
