Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been named the most anticipated film of 2015.
The latest film in the long-running franchise, also known as Episode VII, will be directed by JJ Abrams and star original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill alongside a host of exciting talent including Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o and Hollywood heavyweight Andy Serkis. The trailer alone caused all sorts of buzz as theories poured out and more than 100 million views were clocked up worldwide. The bad news for fans is that there’s still a while to wait: it’s set to be released in December.
Second on the list of anticipated films – according to the annual poll by ticket-seller Fandango – comes Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, which will see Robert Downey Jr, Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth reprise their roles as superheroes Iron Man, Loki and Thor respectively. Due for release in April, it’s been a long time coming: the original film came out in 2012.
The final instalment of The Hunger Games franchise comes in third place, as film fans eagerly await the climax to the four-part adaptation of Suzanne Collins’s trio of novels. Mockingjay part 1 – which was last year’s most highly anticipated film – easily climbed its way to the top of the box office in November and so it seems likely the second will triumph next November, too.
Good news for those who voted Fifty Shades of Grey into fourth place as its release is just around the corner on 14th February, which just happens to be Valentine’s Day. The big-screen adaptation of EL James’s steamy novel will see the ever popular The Fall star Jamie Dornan take on the role of Christian Grey.
Rounding out the top five is yet another sequel: the fourth instalment in the Jurassic series, Jurassic World, takes the spot. Colin Trevorrow is in the director’s seat for the latest dinosaur adventure, while Guardians of the Galaxy leading man Chris Pratt will star. Judging by the instant success of that duo, hang on to your hats for a box office record-breaker come June.
As for more family-focused films, Despicable Me spin-off Minions tops the list ahead of the bumper cast list of Cinderella, Pixar’s Inside Out and Peanuts.
