Jamie Oliver: I turned down a part in The Hobbit

Celebrity chef reveals he could have co-starred with Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch

Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ian McKellen and… Jamie Oliver? It sounds unlikely, but the celebrity chef has revealed he was offered a part in The Hobbit.

Even stranger? He turned Middle Earth down.

It was a trade-off: Oliver would get to cameo in the epic films, and in return the chef would cook for director Peter Jackson’s 50th bash. Talking to Kate Hudson, a guest on Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast, he explained: “The worst thing that happened to me was that I got phoned up by the exec producer and asked did I want to go and cook for Peter Jackson’s birthday, the big birthday. And if I did, they would fly me over and I could be a hobbit in the film. ”

But this Essex boy didn’t have time for a trip to Bag End. “I was working, I couldn’t get out of it,” he sighed.

And it seems Jamie and Jackson weren’t the only ones to miss out. The chef claimed he would have borrowed the costume to… surprise his wife: “I really wanted to do it, I would have got right into it as well, I would have taken the costume home and said ‘Jools, let’s make love!’”

Sadly, much as every girl probably daydreams about making love to a hairy footed hobbit, this was a fantasy that was not to be.
