The past will return to haunt Kat Moon next year when EastEnders portrays the emotive issue of historic child sex abuse allegations, a show spokesperson today confirmed to RadioTimes.com.
Market-stall holder Kat (Jessie Wallace) will be at the centre of a storyline that sees her late uncle Harry revealed as a serial sex offender.
Long-term viewers of the BBC1 soap will recall that Kat was groomed and then raped by Harry (played by Michael Elphick) when she was 13. The sexual abuse resulted in the birth of Kat’s daughter Zoe, who was then raised as Kat’s sister.
The Slater family secret only came to be exposed years later when Zoe (Michelle Ryan) announced plans to live in Spain with her uncle Harry – a revelation that led to Kat memorably announcing that she was really Zoe’s birth mother.
Now, in scenes to be shown in early 2015, Kat – who has recently split from husband Alfie (Shane Richie) – will be drawn into a new police investigation when it’s revealed that she may not have been Harry’s only victim.
A spokesperson for EastEnders said today: “EastEnders has a rich history of tackling difficult social issues and Kat’s continued story is one of these.”
Speaking recently about his plans for both Kat and Alfie in the new year, executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins commented:
“Their story for next year is new, fresh and exciting. And for characters that have been around for a long time, that’s very hard to do. And hopefully we’ve achieved that.”
