Doctor Who beats Downton Abbey as the one TV show you couldn’t do without on Christmas Day readers pick the hit BBC1 sci-fi show over Downton, Call the Midwife and EastEnders as their essential viewing on 25th December

Think Christmas Day is all about presents under the tree, festive tunes, mince pies and drunken relations? Well, for over half of TV fans we asked, it just wouldn’t be the same if Doctor Who wasn’t on the telly.

We asked you what TV show you couldn’t live without on Christmas Day – and Doctor Who won by an impressive majority.

Over 1,100 readers had their say with 52% choosing the hit BBC sci-fi show as the TV they’d watch if they could only sit down in front of one programme this Christmas Day.

Doctor Who, starring Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, beat of competition from the likes of Downton Abbey, EastEnders and the Queen’s speech to get to the top spot.

Fans are currently waiting with baited breath for the upcoming festive episode, which is set to star Nick Frost as Father Christmas, to find out if Coleman’s Clara will depart the show.

ITV period drama Downton Abbey, which follows the lives, loves and scandals of the aristocratic Crawley family and their staff in 1920s Yorkshire, came in second with 18% of the votes. EastEnders (9%), Strictly Come Dancing (7%) and Call the Midwife (6%) made up the rest of the top five.

This is the second year Doctor Who has been voted the must-watch Christmas TV show. Last years vote saw 65% choose Doctor Who.
