New pictures from Broadchurch series two – but what’s with all the bluebells?

The identities of characters played by Charlotte Rampling, Eve Myles and Marianne-Jean Baptiste are also revealed in a new set of promotional stills

Broadchurch series two has brought out my inner detective. With scant details of the new episodes available, I’ve resorted to guess work to determine what happens in series two. Based on the new trailer released last week, I reckon David Tennant’s DI Alec Hardy is reinvestigating the Sandbrook case that left him disgraced. (Here’s why).

With a helping hand from Olivia Colman’s DS Ellie Miller, it looks like Hardy might reopen the case of the two murdered sisters – but the first footage holds another clue which I’m struggling to solve: bluebells.

The violet flowers were shown in a woodland area, explored by a mystery stroller…

…and dried in – or painted on – a piece of paper held open by Ellie:

And now, the first images from the second series feature the entire cast, standing on the beach surrounded by – you guessed it – bluebells.

So, what does it mean? Did bluebells populate the scene of the latest crime? Are they the clue to solve the case? Am I reading far, far too much into this? (Probably.)

With series two set to begin on Monday 5th January, there’s not long to wait until we (finally) get some answers – and, in the meantime, this new set of stills give us another nugget of information: the character names of Charlotte Rampling, Eve Myles and more of the Broadchurch newcomers.

Rampling will play Jocelyn Knight, with Myles portraying Claire Ripley. Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s character is named Sharon Bishop and Phoebe Waller-Bridge will play Abby Thompson, while James D’Arcy and Meera Syal’s on-screen identities still a mystery… for now.

Broadchurch returns to ITV on Monday 5th January. Check out all the new images below:
