The 53-year-old posed with characters including Edith (Laura Carmichael), Mary (Michelle Dockery), Carson (Jim Carter) and Tom (Allen Leech), after he made a guest appearance as a suave visitor to their home. Mrs Hughes –played by Phyllis Logan – took the selfie, holding out a camera as far as she could.

The one-off charity special sees Clooney visit the Crawleys’ home as an American wedding guest, with Lady Grantham initially mistaking him for her husband. The characters are so taken with the foreign visitor that even the usually unflappable Dowager swoons when Clooney kisses her.

Clooney secured a part on the show after becoming friends with actor Hugh Bonneville, who said his Monuments Men co-star  “sprinkled magic dust over Downton Abbey.”
