He is pale, stealthy and always dressed in black. We can totally imagine him kipping in a coffin. But Severus Snape is not – we repeat, not – a vampire.
Harry Potter author JK Rowling has taken to her popular website Pottermore to dispel years of fan speculation about Snape’s true origins, confirming that he is a wizard and not a blood-drinking, bat-loving vampire.
“While it is true that he has an unhealthy pallor, and is sometimes described as looking like a large bat in his long black coat, he never actually turns into a bat,” Rowling writes.
“We meet him outside in the castle by daylight, and no corpses with puncture marks in their necks ever turn up at Hogwarts,” she continues, adding: “In short, Snape is not a re-vamped Trocar.”
Trocar was a vampire teacher JK Rowling originally created for Hogwarts, but who never actually appeared in the literary series.
Rowling has been releasing daily updates on her wizarding world via Pottermore to celebrate the 12 Days of Christmas.
