2014 was the year of the selfie – and here are the best celebrity efforts

There's been a 500% increase in the use of the word 'selfie' on Twitter - and we're celebrating by remembering our 20 favourite poses, from Tom Hiddleston to Ricky Gervais

Social networking site Twitter has released its annual statistics and the word ‘selfie’ has been mentioned more than 92 million times. That’s a whopping 500 percent increase on 2013.

It seems we can’t get enough of taking pictures of ourselves and then tweeting about them.

In fact, this year’s ‘golden tweet‘ – ie. the tweet retweeted the most times – is Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres’s star-studded selfie. You know the one? She grabbed pretty much every famous face within arms reach and stuffed them all in a shot taken midway through the ceremony. It’s not just this year’s most retweeted tweet; it’s the most retweeted tweet since the site launched.

So here are our favourite celebrity selflies of 2014 and memorable efforts from the dark ages of Twitter, when ‘selfie’ hadn’t even entered the dictionary…

Ricky Gervais

The Derek star asks, “Seriously, is it just me, or am I getting better looking with age?”

Mark Gatiss

We suspect Sherlock devotees knew where Mark was off to with this dapper get up. He tweeted that he was going to talk to a man about a dog.

Paul Hollywood

Of course you’d have a selfie in the Bake Off tent with host Sue Perkins. Although it’d be better if there were fewer plates and more cake…

David Harewood

Homeland star David Harewood said he was in need of some good vibes today… then he got stuck in a lift.

Rupert Penry-Jones

The Silk star tests out the various ways to wear his barrister’s wig… they don’t work.

Stephen Fry

As the man who introduced Twitter to the masses, Stephen has of course found an easier way to take a selfie – use a mirror.

Idris Elba

Yes, even Luther wears a bit of make-up. Here applied in a frantic rush as he’s already supposed to be on the air… Although there’s always time for a selfie, of course.

Dan Stevens

Oh look, it’s Dan Stevens on the Downton Abbey set being all sweet and sending Valentine’s wishes from himself and co-star Allen Leech. Always a romantic. Minus his heartbreaking exit from the show, of course.

Joey Essex

Being Joey Essex must be exhausting.

Sarah Millican

Our comic columnist shows us how it’s done. Sultry look? Check. Cute outfit? Check. Adorable animal? Check. Seflie gold.

Jonathan Ross

Also going for the cute animal angle. We’re not sure who is enjoying this more: Jonathan, the dog or us.

Dara O Briain

Even sharp-tongued Mock the Week host and stand-up comic Dara O Briain enjoys a bit of selfie action. Well, when there’s a photo op with Eddie Izzard, wouldn’t you?

Oh, go on then, one for luck as we give this one one more spin…
