The Force is strong with this one. Just one week after the teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens was unleashed online, it has already racked up more than 100 million views worldwide.
More than 63 million of those views are on YouTube, where the trailer is tearing up the charts. Its first week numbers are well ahead of Jurassic World (55 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron (50 million) and Fifty Shades of Grey (36 million). Here it is again, in case you have forgotten:
The teaser is only 88 seconds long, yet by our calculations fans have watched it for a cumulative total of 279 years. That’s enough to watch the first six episodes of the saga 180,000 times, although repeating Episode 1 that often would feel like an eternity.
Perhaps even more impressive are the number of fan made remakes and parodies that have already been produced. We ran through some of our favourites earlier in the week, including everything from Lego to Lucas, but here are two more that have been made in the interim and you simply must watch.
First, if twee director Wes Anderson made Star Wars…
…and best of all, a shot for shot remake only using footage from the original trilogy.
If clever YouTubers keep going at this rate, there will be no need for The Force Awakens to actually open next year on December 18th. Actually, forget I said that. It can’t get here fast enough.
Until then, there’s time for a few more plays…
