Is David Oyelowo the latest British actor in the running for an Oscar?

The Selma star joins Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and Timothy Spall in the mix for the 2015 best actor awards...

Around this time of year, the film industry is buzzing with excitement ahead of the 2015 awards season – and speculation of who will be walking the red carpets is rife.

At this point, the best actor categories look set to be packed with British talent as Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne lead the charge playing British intellectuals in The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything, with Timothy Spall also in the race for his eponymous role in Mr Turner.

But British actor David Oyelowo looks set to challenge their bids with a starring role playing yet another famous face – Dr. Martin Luther King.

Selma follows the civil rights activist as he campaigns to secure voting rights for African-Americans and co-stars Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon B. Johnson and Oprah Winfrey, who also serves as an executive producer.

Spooks actor Oyelowo – who starred with Winfrey in last year’s The Butler – has already been tipped for his captivating performance as King, who pioneered the civil rights movement in America until his assassination in 1968, aged 39.
