Gangnam Style has officially ‘broken’ the internet

PSY's music video has been viewed so many times that it broke YouTube's counter

Gangnam Style has blown up the internet. PSY must be very proud.

The Gangnam Style music video has been watched so many times that YouTube has had to upgrade the way it records video views.

The video has been watched more than 2,147,483,647 times, easily making it the most watched video of all time.

YouTube has now upgraded its code, meaning that the system is foolproof up to 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 views.

That’s more than nine quintillion. Sounds like a challenge.

Now for the technical bit. YouTube explains in a post that when it built the system it based its view count on a 32-bit integer, meaning that the number could not go beyond the 2.1 billion limit.

“We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (= 2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY,” YouTube explains.

“‘Gangnam Style’ has been viewed so many times we had to upgrade to a 64-bit integer (9,223,372,036,854,775,808)!”

If you now hover over the Gangnam Style number the view counter also spins madly – almost as if it can’t believe the galloping viral success that is PSY.

Got time for one more view?
