The Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer dropped online last Friday and the internet has been buzzing ever since. Those 88 seconds of footage – featuring John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac and not the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch – have been poured over by Star Wars fans over the last four days, clocking up more than 44 million YouTube views in less than 72 hours.
That’s only taking into account the footage hosted by the official Star Wars YouTube account (which has 10 million views) and Movieclips Trailers (which adds a further 34 million) – the number is likely to grow once other channels are factored in.
Compare that with Fifty Shades of Grey which amassed 36.4 million views in the same period back in July and it’s clear that sci-fi beats sexy, at least when it comes to buzz around imminent cinema releases…
While Fifty Shades of Grey is poised for release on Valentine’s Day, Episode VII isn’t out in cinemas until 18th December 2015 – but that hasn’t done anything to dull fans’ excitement. Several spin-off trailers have already appeared online, including a Lego interpretation and George Lucas-inspired edit with various Star Wars-related hashtags trending on Twitter over the weekend.
But while plenty of fans have been enthusiastic about the first glimpse of JJ Abrams’ film, the #BlackStormtrooper hashtag surfaced on social media and some YouTube commenters wondered whether a black Stormtrooper made sense in the Star Wars universe – remarks actor John Boyega responded to, telling “to whom it may concern” to “get used to it”.
