Sorry, Broadchurch fans. Despite speculation to the contrary, ITV have not given series three the green light just yet.
Reports emerged this morning that the drama – starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman – had been handed another outing before series two has even aired, with writer Chris Chibnall “racing to finish series three, so shooting can begin next summer,” according to the Sun.
ITV have since denied the rumours, stating that Chibnall has plenty on his plate as he gears up to launch series two in January 2015.
Little is known about the drama’s return beyond the fact that Tennant and Colman are reprising their roles as DI Alec Hardy and DS Ellie Miller, along with returning cast members Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Arthur Darvill and more.
So, with another eight episodes poised for release next year, there’s plenty more Broadchurch for fans to get their fix. But if ITV’s denial has blown the wind out of your sails, cheer yourself with the fact that another season remains on Chibnall’s radar, even if he’s not yet been commissioned to write it. “[A third series] sometimes crosses my mind,” he told RadioTimes.com back in August, which certainly sounds promising…
And if series two’s viewing figures are anything like the drama’s critically-acclaimed and award-winning debut last year, we can’t imagine the broadcaster will pass up the chance of another bite at that lucrative cherry.
