Forget May the fourth – the 28th of November is now officially our Star Wars day, as the new trailer for JJ Abrams’ sequel The Force Awakens finally hit the web. But what exactly happens in the 88-second clip that everyone’s talking about?
The trailer begins with a mysterious voice asking “There has been an awakening – have you felt it?” before John Boyega (Attack the Block) rears a panicked head – but as a stormtrooper! But what has struck such fear into him?
Boyega’s character had been rumoured to be a stormtrooper before, so it’s good to know that some internet speculation is accurate (prepare for a lot more) Some think he may be an Empire soldier who eventually becomes a Jedi, or at least joins the side of the light – but it’s impossible to know for sure.
Next, we see a new little robot to rival R2-D2 in the cuteness stakes – game of football, anyone?
After being introduced to Boyega at the trailer’s start, we next get a closer look at the new stormtrooper gear. Clearly, the war between the Empire and the rebels didn’t end after the destruction of the Death Star back in Return of the Jedi – but have they really kept fighting all this time? The film is set decades after episode VI, after all…
Daisy Ridley’s character appears next, apparently escaping on some kind of hover-vehicle in some unusual clothes. Some think that she may be playing the daughter of smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) – and if that’s true, she’s certainly got her dad’s piloting moves.
A shot of a rebel fighter (Inside Llewyn Davis’ Oscar Isaac) shows the good guys haven’t upgraded as much as the Stormtroopers above – they’re still wearing the same jumpsuits from 1977’S A New Hope when they blew up the first Death Star. The suit also matches photos of presumed villain Adam Driver which were taken on the set a few months ago – is he really the villain seen later in the trailer, or does he have a different role to play?
We next see the X-Wings flying in formation over a lake – it looks gorgeous, but why are they fighting? Have they been dragged out of retirement, after decades of peace – and is that why they’re still using old uniforms and vehicles? Quite possibly the “awakening” referred to by the voiceover has somehow galvanised the two forces – including this next shadowy figure, who may be the film’s Big Bad.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Star Wars without some awesome merchandising opportunities – whoever this new villain is (possibly Adam Driver’s character), you can bet that his three-blade lightsaber will be the number-one gift next Christmas.
He also looks pretty menacing – but never fear, because the Millennium Falcon is here to save the day, and take on some Empire TIE fighters! Like the X-Wings, perhaps it has been dragged out of retirement to fight again – after all, in the original trilogy it was already referred to as a load of junk, and it doesn’t look in much better nick now.
Sadly, the new trailer shows no sign of the Falcon’s pilot (Han Solo) or his compatriots Luke (Mark Hamill) and Leia (Carrie Fisher) – guess we’ll just have to wait a while until we can see what part they play in all this.
