Emmerdale bosses are lining up a “sensational” exit plotline for Katie Addyman, following confirmation that actress Sammy Winward is to leave the ITV soap.
A statement released by ITV today said: “Sammy Winward will leave Emmerdale in 2015 after playing Katie Addyman for 13 years.
“Her decision to pursue other acting opportunities gives the writing team the opportunity to create a sensational, not-to-be missed storyline for her exit. Stay tuned for more information on what’s to come for Katie Addyman…”
News broke late last night that Winward, 29, was set to leave Emmerdale after 13 years playing Katie. She apparently told show bosses that she was to quit after filming key Christmas episodes that see her character remarry childhood sweetheart Andy Sugden (Kelvin Fletcher).
A source told the Sun: “Sammy is the Michelle Keegan of Emmerdale so everyone’s gutted she’s leaving”.
During her time on the soap, Winward’s most notable storylines included Katie having an affair with Andy’s half-brother Robert back in 2004, while more recent events saw Katie injured after being trapped down a disused mine shaft. As to whether Katie will now be killed off, the source added:
“The producers haven’t decided yet. Emmerdale love a big death because it’s great for their ratings.”
