Martin Fowler is to arrive back in Albert Square in the coming weeks – with a brand-new face.
Actor James Bye has taken over the role from James Alexandrou, with Martin set to return to Walford following a health crisis for wife Sonia (Natalie Cassidy).
Scenes to be shown on Monday 8 December will see Sonia back from hospital following an admission to hospital caused by a shock collapse at the Fat Blasters weigh-in.
Martin and Sonia finally get to open up to each other about their feelings, but begin to question whether they’re still actually in love. Just what is the future for the Fowlers?
Speaking recently about his signing to EastEnders, James Bye said: “It’s an honour to be joining the cast of such a great show – especially as part of the long standing Fowler family. It’s a huge opportunity for me to put my own stamp onto an iconic character and I can’t wait to get started!”
Executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins added: “With James Alexandrou’s blessing – something which was very important to us – we have recast everyman Martin Fowler after extensive auditions. Martin is an EastEnders original – the first baby born on the Square and part of the show’s roots – and, as we celebrate 30 years on Albert Square, it’s important to look backwards as we move forwards.
“Our casting executive, Julia Crampsie has found a genuine relatable London bloke in the talented James Bye – and we are sure that viewers old and new will soon warm to Martin Fowler’s charms as he returns home to Walford.”
