What clues are there in the new Doctor Who Christmas special picture?

Capaldi, Coleman, Frost... and snow!

There’s exactly a month to go until the Doctor Who Christmas special, and while we don’t know too much about it a new image released today offers some tantalising clues about what we can expect.

The picture (above) shows the Doctor (Peter Capaldi), Clara (Jenna Coleman) and Father Christmas (Nick Frost) on a snowy rooftop rocking some winter gear apparently the same roof from the preview clip broadcast for Children in Need earlier this month.

Behind, two elves grapple with spilled presents (we can only hope Peter Capaldi will whip that guitar out at some point) – and one may be a little familiar, as he’s played by Dan Starkey, aka the Doctor’s Sontaran ally Strax. Despite Starkey’s appearance in the special the roles are probably unrelated – we can’t imagine Strax submitting to that jingly hat for any cause.

A line from the Children in Need preview about tangerines also seems to have an impact on the episode, as Santa holds one meaningfully and more are strewn about the floor. Could there be more meaning behind St Nick’s warning to the Doctor about leaving room for a tangerine than meets the eye?

Of course, we all know the damage the Doctor can do with fruit on Christmas day…
