We’ve already heard that former Doctor Who companion Billie Piper would love to travel with Peter Capaldi’s Doctor –but now it sounds like current star Jenna Coleman wouldn’t mind doing a temporary swap (so long as a classic Doctor was also thrown in).
“My favourite Doctors are Tennant and Baker,” Coleman told RadioTimes.com.
“I worked with them both, too! [in 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor] Well, I never got to work with Tom Baker, but I was on set with him. Me and Steven [Moffat, the series head writer] came in to watch his scenes.”
However, the actress wouldn’t be drawn on which of the two most recent Doctors – Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi – she’d preferred travelling with.
“You can’t ask that!” she said. “That’s like saying who do you like better, your mum or dad? They are both very dear to me.”
“Very diplomatic,” she added.
Joining the series in 2012 with Matt Smith’s Doctor, Coleman’s Clara Oswald continued to travel with the newly regenerated Twelfth Doctor after last year’s Christmas special. And while she won’t pick a favourite, Coleman did admit that the two incarnations of the Time Lord had their distinctions.
“The energy that you’re working with between the two is very different,” she said.
“Matt’s Doctor will come out to the room, and he’s like a tornado that goes round, whereas Peter’s Doctor is much more contained and enigmatic. He kind of draws the room into him.”
She added: “The things that they have in common are, they are both very inventive, they are both really generous, and really brave.”
So does Clara herself have a favourite between the whirlwind Eleventh Doctor and the more subdued Twelfth? As ever, Coleman remained cagey.
“I think to Clara they’re the same man. He is the Doctor, and it’s a lot of what this series has been about, her accepting that. I don’t think there’s a preference to her.”
The Doctor Who series 8 DVD is out on the 24th of November
