The lyrics for Do They Know It’s Christmas have been changed for Band Aid 30.
As the stars gather in the studio this Saturday to record the latest version of the charity single, there may be a few odd lines for those familiar with the original song.
The lyrics have been changed to reflect the Ebola epidemic in West Africa – the original song was written in response to the 1984 famine in Ethiopia.
The single is being recorded today by artists including
One Direction, Ellie Goulding, Emeli Sande and Ed Sheeran, and will get its first airing this Sunday night during The X Factor.
Here is the BBC’s Natalie Jamieson’s picture of the new lyrics.
The most controversial change for those following on social media is that Bono’s original line, “Well tonight thank God it’s them instead of you,” has been changed to “Well tonight we’re reaching out and touching you.”
Other key changes include “How can they know it’s Christmas time at all?” from “Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?”.
The “Feed the world” chorus is now tweaked to include, “Feel the world” and “Heal the world”.
