Paul Akister made it to Judges’ Houses with Louis Walsh last year, but after failing to win a place on the live shows, he came back for another bash.
It’s lucky he did, with returning judge Simon Cowell getting quite head judge-esque with Walsh, announcing he was glad he was back this year to make sure singers like Paul got their chance.
Here’s Paul singing John Lennon’s Jealous Guy in his first audition of this year:
A good tip: if you want Wembley Arena to sit up and listen, sing Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On. Mel B and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini even gave Simon Cowell a lap dance. Need he do more?
Onto Boot Camp and the Six Chair Challenge, Paul started singing Otis Redding’s These Arms of Mine and other contestants in the chairs literally sank their head into their hands. Boys’ mentor Mel B did eventually swap him into her team and it was onto Judges’ Houses.
Busting out a reality show classic, Paul hit Mel B and guest judge Emma Bunton with a performance of Bridge Over Troubled Water while in Mexico. Bunton admitted she had loved Paul from the previous year and he sailed through.
Straight into live shows, Paul sang the song of the moment – former X Factor contestant Ella Henderson’s Ghost.
While he’s had a few comments about being a bit uneventful on the stage, Paul’s been nowhere near a sing-off and clearly has plenty of fans picking up the phone to vote for him. In keeping with this, he’s singing Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now this weekend. A nice message to his fans (and the judges).
The X Factor continues Saturday and Sunday at 8:00pm
