For a long time bands suffered on X Factor, until the likes of One Direction, JLS and Little Mix came along to change the lay of the land. Only the Young fit the bill of quirky, likeable and loveable with Mikey, Betsy, Parisa and Charlie making up the band.
The group love to mix up an older song and make it their own, kicking off their audition process with this version of Elton John’s Something About The Way You Look Tonight. “I love you guys,” Cowell said, adding, “I’d love to work with you”.
Onto Wembley for Boot Camp and the group got the crowd going with their performance of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5. Poor Walsh looked like he was going to cripple under the pressure of choosing between so many singers in the groups category, but Only the Young got their shot, winning a place at Judges’ Houses.
In Bermuda the band showed off their vocals with a performance of former contestant Ella Henderson’s Ghost. They had the right vibe for guest judge Tulisa Contostavlos, who helped convince Walsh to take them through to live shows. And given she guided Little Mix to the title, her view on which bands will be successful in the show is definitely one to listen to.
Only the Young have slightly suffered during live shows, with criticism that they’ve not really found their original style. But they won over Mel B with their 80s week performance of Come On Eileen – and after having a taste of the sing-off they appear to have bounced back.
This weekend they’ll take on Michael Jackson’s Blame It On The Boogie.
The X Factor continues Saturday and Sunday at 8:00pm on ITV
