Staying in a TV talent contest does not come much tougher than this… and sadly for MasterChef judge Gregg Wallace he has become the first celebrity to be eliminated from Strictly Come Dancing 2014 following tonight’s dance-off.
Wallace and his partner Aliona Vilani were forced into the challenge with Mrs Brown’s Boys star Jennifer Gibney and professional partner Tristan MacManus after they came bottom of the combined results table of the viewers’ vote and judges scores following Saturday’s performances.
Wallace was eventually voted off by all four judges when the crunch time came.
Sunday’s dance-off saw both couples perform their Saturday routines again with Gibney and MacManus reprising their waltz to Natural Woman by Aretha Franklin and Wallace and Vilani performing their Charleston to Hey Good Looking by Ray Charles in a bid to impress the judges and remain in the competition.
Judge Craig Revel Horwood chose to save Gibney with the words: “Both couples improved enormously but I have to save Jennifer and Tristan.”
There was worse to come for the MasterChef man when remaining judges Darcey Bussell, Bruno Tonioli and Len Goodman all chose to save Gibney as well.
“I enjoyed both performances, both deserved to stay, but the couple I am going to save is Jennifer and Tristan,” said Goodman.
Reflecting on his elimination, Wallace said: “I have to say it is the most terrifying thing I have ever, ever done. What I really liked most of all was practice, coming in here [the studio] really scared me. If I come back again, can you just watch me while I practice?”
Addressing his partner, he said: “Thank you so much for your patience – you are a saint”.
Tonight’s results show featured performances from jazz musicians Jamie Cullum and Gregory Porter.
Next week’s edition of the programme will be the first of Strictly Come Dancing’s themed weekends of the 2014 series, with movies the chosen topic.
Strictly Come Dancing is on Saturday October 11 at 6.30pm
