Everything you need to know about Magic Mike XXL

Channing Tatum is back - Matthew McConaughey isn't - but there's a whole host of exciting new stars to get excited about...

Magic Mike was wildly popular when first released back in 2012. We can’t think why? Take Channing Tatum and a host of equally buff co-stars, have them strip on camera and – voilà – you have a bonafide path to box office success.

Luckily, numbers do the talking for the powers that be in Hollywood. Tatum and co have the go-ahead for a sequel, Magic Mike XXL, and we’ve now had the first look at it via the new poster below…

So, what do you need to know about the eagerly awaited follow-up? Well…

The plot

An official synopsis from Warner Bros tells us exactly what to expect from the return of our favourite stripper:

Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, Magic Mike XXL finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel.

But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them.

On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways.

Who’s back?

Channing Tatum reprises his role as the eponymous Magic Mike, along with co-stars Matt Bomer (Ken), Joe Manganiello (Big Dick Richie), Kevin Nash (Tarzan), Adam Rodriguez (Tito) and Gabriel Iglesias (Tobias). Matthew McConaughey is a confirmed no (sorry, ladies) and word on the street is that Alex Pettyfer is out too, although we’ve still got our fingers crossed he’ll make his return.

Who’s new?

A string of actors are keen to reap the benefits of Mike and his Magic torso. Among the famous names to sign on for the sequel are Hunger Games actress Elizabeth Banks, Amber Heard (The Rum Diary), Community’s Donald Glover, Andie MacDowell (Four Weddings and a Funeral), Jada Pinkett Smith (Gotham), and fellow Step Up alum dancer Stephen Boss.

We’re also told that Michael Strahan will be showcasing his dance moves on the silver screen. The Live With Kelly and Michael co-host is known for his repeated quips about joining the follow-up, even performing for Tatum during an appearance on the show. With skills like that, how could he not comply…

Good news, Magic Mike fans – shooting is well under way. On September 29, Tatum celebrated the cast and crew’s return on set with a few special Tweets.

Release Date

In the US, 1st July 2015. Over here in the UK we’ve got to wait until the 7th August.

Tatum tweeted out the not-so-subtle promotional poster on February 4, and included an equally tantalising message to boot. The poster features a disappointedly clothed Magic Mike, although fans do get a glimpse at his notorious midsection, with the phrase “Coming” followed by the release date. Get it?
