The Maze Runner sequel gets cinema release date

James Dashner’s second novel The Scorch Trials will arrive next year

James Dashner’s best-selling novel The Maze Runner has just enjoyed a bumper opening weekend overseas as its revealed the sequel will arrive in cinemas this time next year.

The Scorch Trials will release on September 18 2015 and judging by the current success of The Maze Runner it will be well received.

In just three days director Wes Ball’s big-screen adaptation has pulled in $81, 500, 000 (£49,899,589), reports BoxOfficeMojo, pulling in higher numbers than the opening Hunger Games film in both South Korea and Russia ($5.5 million/ £3,367,457). There’s still a few weeks until the film hits many other countries, including the UK on October 10th.

It’s the latest in a run of hugely successful young adult novel adaptations, which sees main character Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) sent into a dangerous maze, with no memory of his previous life and no idea how to escape.

Will Poulter (We’re The Millers), Kaya Scodelario (Skins) and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Game of Thrones) also star.

There are four books in total in the series (including a prequel) so there could be more films on the way, too.
