Scott Mills has become the first cover star in the 91-year history of Radio Times to be chosen by a public vote.
The Radio 1 DJ emerged triumphant with 30% of the vote in a poll that pitted all 15 of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing celebrity contestants against each other to decide who would get their very own Newsstand cover of Radio Times magazine.
Mrs Brown’s Boys actress Jennifer Gibney came a close second, scooping 25% of the 214,000 votes cast across a week on RadioTimes.com. There were also strong showings from pop sensation Pixie Lott (17%) and Casualty actress Suntera Sarker, who received 9% of the total vote.
“Wow! My mum was so excited when I told her I was doing Strictly, that I didn’t think anything could top it. But wait till I tell her I’m front page of the Radio Times,” said Scott Mills. “Thanks everyone who voted for me, I’m genuinely touched.”
Other celebrities taking place this year include Frankie Bridge from The Saturdays, former TOWIE star Mark Wright, MasterChef’s Gregg Wallace and tennis superstar, Judy Murray.
Strictly Come Dancing 2014 is the twelfth series of the BBC celebrity dancing competition and the first that will take place without Bruce Forsyth at the helm. The veteran entertainer stepped down from regular duties alongside Tess Daly at the end of the last run to be replaced by It Takes Two presenter Claudia Winkleman.
