For more than a decade, we’ve been sending groups of shaking celebrities into the Australian jungle to – among other things – eat kangaroo privates for hit reality series I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!
They live in a campsite together, battle to win food and generally have a good rant and rave about each other as celebrity egos clash. It’s TV gold.
Now, Australian TV network Ten is adopting the show’s format. But it’s not settling for the Aussie jungle that our celebs are used to. Oh, no. The Australian version will be packing them off to Africa.
“I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! is a big, noisy and spectacular show for all the family and an incredible live reality television event. It will be a massive production, set in an amazing location in Africa,” Ten’s chief programming officer Beverley McGarvey tells TBI Vision.
Presumably dropping them in the Aussie jungle would be about as ‘remote’ as the UK version pitching up some hammocks in the New Forest. Either that, or they feel it’s about time their poor kangaroos were left alone.
After all, the German version of the show (Ich Bin Ein Star-Holt Mich Hier Raus!) follows the UK series into the same camp. Even long-standing Medic Bob sticks around for that series.
But Australian stars would be just too used to the heat, too used to the critters they’ve lackadaisically tossed out of their shoes all of their lives, too used to casually swimming in shark-infested water for a bit of weekend fun. They need more of a challenge.
Which part of Africa, and which trials they will face as a result, remains to be seen, but a note to the continent’s animals: it’s probably time to start hiding now…
