Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper’s mysterious new movie coming to UK cinemas this autumn

The Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle co-stars filmed 1920s drama Serena two years ago - so why has it taken so long to get a release date?

Over the past few years, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper have developed one of the most lucrative on-screen partnerships in Hollywood. Silver Linings Playbook bagged Lawrence an Oscar and her co-star a nomination from the Academy, with both recognised in the supporting shortlists earlier this year for American Hustle.

But did you know the pair have another film – Serena – in the works? Set at the end of the 1920s in the North Carolina mountains, the flick stars Lawrence and Cooper as love-struck newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton whose passionate marriage unravels when his hidden past comes to light.

First announced in January 2012, Serena was filmed two years ago but there’s been radio silence ever since, until today’s sudden announcement that the film will be released in UK cinemas on 24 October 2014.

There’s still no trailer or American release date for Serena – just a handful of promotional stills including a new addition of Lawrence (above) released today. So, with two of Tinseltown’s most bankable stars, an Oscar-friendly plot, plus a supporting cast that includes Rhys Ifans, Sean Harris, Toby Jones and Sam Reid, just how has Serena remained under the radar for so long?

According to a source speaking to The Hollywood Reporter last year, the delay is down to director Susanne Bier’s desire to live up to critical darlings Silver Linings and Hustle. “Susanne is a total perfectionist,” revealed the insider. “We didn’t want to be the OK version of the Jennifer Lawrence-Bradley Cooper coupling.”

Either way, today’s news means we’ll be seeing Jennifer Lawrence back on our screens even sooner than we thought, ahead of the hotly-anticipated release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 on 21 November. What’s not to get excited about?
