How the internet responded to Guardians of the Galaxy

Fans rushed to social media to share their excitement over Marvel's latest film

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy had a pretty good debut weekend, raking in $94 million at the US and Canadian box office. That earns the film the title of third biggest opening of the year (behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier, $95m, and Transformers: Age of Extinction’s $100m). It also crushes the previous August opening weekend record of $69.3 million, taken by The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007.

In the UK a studio estimate puts the takings at £6.4 million over its opening four days, one of the biggest for a Marvel original. It beat Iron Man’s opening four days (£5.6m) as well as X-Men’s £4.8m four-day takings.

Basically it did pretty blooming well.

Actor Chris Pratt, who plays Peter Quill, took to Facebook to thank fans.

Meanwhile, hoards of cinema-goers hit social media to share their excitement about the latest film.

Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel, was a big hit

So much so even this fan’s mum – or “birthgiver” as she’s called in her phone contacts – has taken to texting like him

Cinemagoers wanted to head straight back in

There were actual tears

Fans are pretty sure Chris Pratt is set for life

For some, it’s kind of coming to life

This sounds like it probably didn’t happen, but fun to imagine

It’s possible some people waited a bit too long for extra footage at the end of the film

People want more, more, more

Basically, this pretty much sums it up
