Playstation 4 adds Blu-Ray 3D support

A new software update beats Microsoft Xbox One to the punch

If you’re planning an Avatar/Gravity/Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs viewing party this weekend but don’t have a Blu-ray player, then you’re in luck. Sony has just released an update to the Playstation 4 that lets it play 3D Blu-rays.

Arch rivals Microsoft announced a similar update to their own Xbox One console, but it’s not due to arrive until sometime in August. Sony fans will get to enjoy the extra dimension for at least three days longer than their nemeses.

Although 3D remains a controversial issue in the cinema, and online services like Netflix and YouTube do offer 3D streams, Blu-ray probably remains the easiest way to enjoy 3D in the home. PS4 users should be able to download the 1.75 software update now. You’ll have to provide your own glasses though.
