Actress Michelle Gomez – described by Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat as “a tiny bit satanic” – is the latest star to join new Doctor Peter Capaldi in his debut series.
Gomez is best know for roles in comedies Green Wing and Bad Education, where she plays frenetic, often lascivious, figures of authority. How many of those attributes will stand her in stead for her new role remains to be seen (Doctor Who is, after all, a family show), but Gomez is set to play the Gatekeeper of the Nethersphere, a character who at least sounds as if she’s in charge of something important.
Gomez said she was looking forward to joining fellow Scot Capaldi, who will make his first full appearance when the series returns on 23 August. “Well of course Peter Capaldi is our next Doctor, which makes complete sense. I’m thrilled to join him,” said Gomez. “Well, you would be wouldn’t you?”
Moffat added: “I’ve known Michelle for years, and I’m thrilled to welcome her to Doctor Who. She’s everything we need – brilliant, Scottish, and a tiny bit satanic.”
If you’ve seen Gomez in action before, you’ll know what he means. If not, well a picture speaks a thousand words…
