Ricky Wilson on The Voice: “I was gambling with a load of people’s careers”

Kasier Chiefs frontman admits his time as a coach on the reality show could have affected the band but says, “the boat needed rocking”

Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson says his time as a coach on BBC reality show The Voice was a risky move for the band.

“I was gambling with a load of people’s careers because we could’ve carried on playing the hits at those festivals that are a little bit like village fetes and I didn’t want to do that.

“I was rocking the boat a little bit, but I think the boat needed rocking,” Wilson tells Q magazine.

Responding to suggestions that he was using the show to promote the band’s new album, Wilson says it’s good to find news ways to connect with their audience. “You’ve got to move with the times and if you can do it, why wouldn’t you want to do it?”

Wilson’s addition to the show alongside fellow new coach Kylie Minogue, and returning faces Sir Tom Jones and will.i.am gave the show a fresh new look. But the next series has yet to confirm its judging line-up.

Wilson told Graham Norton in April that he hadn’t been asked back yet. “I’m not sure who has been asked,” he added.

The Kaiser Chiefs are performing at Glastonbury festival, with footage of their set on BBC3 from 11pm tonight.
