Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi has recorded a heartfelt and funny video message pledging to help students at his former art school after their work was lost in a fire at the building.
“I wish that I could turn back time. Unfortunately, I’m not Cher,” jokes a deadpan Capaldi, as he moves his video phone to reveal the doors of the Tardis behind him. “But I can always pop in here and see what I can do. Give me a minute…”
Capaldi has joined Hollywood star Brad Pitt as a trustee of The Mackintosh Appeal, which aims to raise money to restore parts of the Glasgow Art School’s Mackintosh building, after it was hit by a blaze last month.
Former graphic design student Capaldi is an alumnus of the school, while Pitt is a fan of Scots architect Rennie Mackintosh who designed the building.
Capaldi had uplifting words for students whose work has been destroyed in the fire, saying “I’m so sorry to all of you who have lost your degree shows. All I can say to you is that you are artists, this will only add to your story and you will be reborn and rise from the ashes even stronger.”
