Tom Hiddleston to star (and sing) in Hank Williams biopic

The Avengers Assemble actor will portray the country music legend in upcoming biopic I Saw The Light

Well, Loki what we have here: Tom Hiddleston is set to play Hank Williams in a film about the country music star’s life.

Biopic I Saw the Light will see The Avengers Assemble supervillain portray not only Williams’s Alabama accent but his music too, with Hiddleston set to sing classics such as I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry and Your Cheatin’ Heart.

The role was reported by Deadline but the actor also confirmed it last night by posting a picture of himself as Williams on Twitter.

I Saw the Light will be directed by Marc Abraham and is set to shoot in Louisiana in October.

Williams was one of the major country music stars of the late 1940s and early 1950s – with eight No 1 country singles to his name – but died on New Year’s Day in 1953 at the young age of 29, a victim of his alcoholism and drug abuse.

Known as the “King of the Hillbillies,” he received a posthumous Pulitzer prize in 2010, awarded in recognition for his “pivotal role in transforming country music into a major musical and cultural force” and is enshrined in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Hiddleston is sure to tackle the role with gusto – the star likes nothing more than belting out his favourite tunes whenever he gets the chance. Here’s our collection of Tom Hiddleston’s greatest hits
