Karen Gillan set to join John Travolta and Ethan Hawke in western In a Valley of Violence

The former Doctor Who actress has reportedly been approached to star in the revenge movie from the makers of Oculus

Karen Gillan could be teaming up again with the company behind her recent horror outing Oculus, to star alongside Hollywood big-hitters John Travolta and Ethan Hawke.

Gillan has reportedly been approached by Blumhouse Productions to star in In a Valley of Violence, a western from writer-director Ti West.

The former Doctor Who star is set to play a character named Ellen, who runs a hotel with her younger sister in the wild west town where Hawke’s drifter arrives seeking revenge for the death of his best friend, according to Deadline.

Further details are scarce but it’s hard not to wonder whether the film might be a bit of a genre mash-up, with a supernatural element also thrown into the mix. West is known as a horror director while, along with Oculus, Blumhouse has a back catalogue including the Paranormal Activity movies. Even one of Gillan’s potential co-stars Taissa Farmiga, who is playing Ellen’s sister, has the right background – she’s the star of FX series American Horror Story.

If Gillan does take the role it won’t quite be her first foray into westerns either – she found herself in a dusty frontier town alongside Matt Smith and Arthur Darvill in 2012 Doctor Who episode A Town Called Mercy.
