Stringer Bell actor Idris Elba is set to play a ruthless guerrilla group leader in the upcoming movie Beasts of No Nation – about a young boy who is forced to become mercenary fighter, after a civil war.
The film adaptation of Uzodinma Iweala’s 2005 novel will shoot in Koforidua and Sekondi-Takoradi in Ghana, and will be directed by Sin Nombre and Jane Eyre director Cary Fukunaga, who has been working on the project for seven years.
The controversial movie, which tackles the issue of child soldiers, forced to kill or be killed, is backed by Red Crown Productions (What Maisie Knew, Goats). A Red Crown spokesperson explained: “We fell in love with Iweala’s powerful narrative and Idris and Cary are a tremendous pairing.”
A release date for Beasts of No Nation is yet to be announced.
