Jake Gyllenhaal to shoot new boxing movie Southpaw in Pennsylvania

The Donnie Darko actor is set to star as a welterweight champion in a new flick written by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter

Jake Gyllenhaal has recently been working on Baltasar Kormákur-directed movie Everest, for which he had to grow a mega-beard. New photos of the clean-shaven actor suggest that the movie has now wrapped and he is set to start on his new project.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Olympus Has Fallen), Southpaw, meaning left-handed, is to be shot in Indiana and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It will follow a welterweight champion (Gyllenhaal) on his rise to fame, as his home life deteriorates. The other male lead, yet to be cast, will play Titus Willis, a former pro fighter, who left his career in the ring after losing an eye.

Sherlock Holmes actress Rachel McAdams is also rumoured to be joining the Southpaw cast, as is Last King of Scotland actor Forest Whitaker and 12 Years A Slave actress Lupita Nyong’o.

The project is currently looking for more than 1,000 extras to be part of a boxing crowd and will film this summer between June and August. No release date has been confirmed.
