Benedict Cumberbatch to play Richard III in Shakespeare’s History plays

First Martin Freeman and now BBC2 confirms Cumberbatch will take on the role of the monarch in a TV film


Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast in the second series of Shakespeare’s History plays as none other than Richard III.


Yes, the self-same role that his Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman is to play on the London stage.

BBC2 confirmed the news on its Twitter writing, “We’re delighted to be able to confirm that Benedict Cumberbatch will play Richard III in our second series of Shakespeare’s History plays”.

It adds, “Richard III will be produced by the creative team behind the BAFTA award-winning The Hollow Crown and will be directed by Dominic Cooke.

Freeman is to take on the role from July of this year in London. Further information on Cumberbatch’s role will be released in due course.
