Doctor Who casts Da Vinci’s Demons star Tom Riley in Mark Gatiss episode

The actor, known for his roles in Da Vinci's Demons and Twenty Twelve, will star alongside Peter Capaldi's new Doctor

Tom Riley, the star of Fox’s Da Vinci’s Demons, is to star in an episode of Doctor Who written by Mark Gatiss.

Riley, who plays Leonardo Da Vinci in Batman writer David Goyer’s historical fantasy, will play an undisclosed role alongside Peter Capaldi’s new Doctor in series eight. His previous credits include Inspector Lewis, Twenty Twelve, Monroe and a part opposite former Doctor David Tennant in St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold.

The episode will be the one of two that Mark Gatiss has been commissioned for – although he’s made clear that both may not be in series eight. As of yet, details of what they will entail are scarce but the Sherlock show-runner has previously hinted at a Jane Austin story, and that it would most certainly not involve Time Lords or Gallifrey.

Series eight of Doctor Who is currently filming now, and is expected to air later this year.
