Adam Sandler to shoot video game movie Pixels in Canada

The Sony movie will begin filming in Toronto from May

Harry Potter, The Goonies, and Gremlins director Chris Columbus will direct Pixels in North America this spring. The movie will follow a bunch of video game experts, who have been commissioned by the United States government to protect New York City against an invasion of violent 1980s video game characters.

The 3D animated feature movie will shoot on location around Toronto and is expected to use heavy special effects. Kevin James and Josh Gad are rumoured to be joining Adam Sandler in the movie.

Pixels’ storyline is based on a 2010 short film made by  Patrick Jean in which a man dumps an old TV set on a street in New York. After he’s gone, it releases a weird pixel cloud, which morphs in to  8-bit video game characters from Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Tetris and Arkanoid, which start attacking cars, falling from the sky and taking over the Big Apple.

Pixels is set for release in 2016.
